IKEA installs biogas-powered fuel cell systems

As a complement to rooftop solar systems already in place, IKEA is undertaking the installation of a series of biogas-powered fuel cell systems at it U.S. stores that in total will generate 1.5 MW of energy.
The Swedish home furnishing company on Nov. 17 said it completed the previously announced installation of Bloom Energy systems at two of its Southern California stores, in Costa Mesa and Covina. The company also offered up details about the two systems: The fuel cell program at the 308,000 square-foot Costa Mesa store, which opened in 2003 on 24 acres, is 300 kW generating 2,497,651 kWh/year; the program at the 325,000 square foot Covina store, opened in 2003 on 12.5 acres, is 200 kW generating 1,665,101 kWh/year.
More than a year ago, IKEA installed a similar project at IKEA Emeryville, one of its two San Francisco-area stores. In addition to those California projects, IKEA also is planning fuel cell systems at its other San Francisco-area store, in East Palo Alto, as well as its store in San Diego and in New Haven, Conn.
"Plugging in this fuel cell system is an exciting milestone that complements our existing rooftop solar array," Costa Mesa store manager Laurie Helm said in the company's news release.
Paul Gandara, the Covina store manager, added: "Utilizing fuel cells will reduce greatly our carbon footprint and help create an even more sustainable community here in Southern California."
