Whirlpool moves on last leg of $13.5M wind initiative

Whirlpool Corp. has broken ground on a project to build three wind turbines that will help power its Marion, Ohio, manufacturing facility.
The three turbines will deliver wind-generated power directly to the plant and when fully completed, are expected to provide approximately 19% of the total power consumption of the facility, Whirlpool said in a Dec. 7 news release. The Marion wind project is scheduled for completion in early 2017 and is expected to eliminate the equivalent of more than 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
All three turbines will be built and financed by One Energy as part of a previously announced "Wind for Industry" initiative announced earlier this year. Whirlpool has said the Marion facility project is part of a broader $13.5 million Ohio wind investment that includes the $3.3 million wind turbine project at Whirlpool's Ottawa, Ohio, manufacturing plant; Whirlpool also has a two-turbine farm at its Findlay plant that has been running since January.
The company recently threw its name behind a corporate-backed push on Ohio's lawmakers to reinstate energy efficiency and renewable energy standards that had been frozen in 2014.
