Clif Bar & Co. recognized for greening supply chain
Organic food and drink company Clif Bar & Co. has been recognized by the U.S. EPA for its leadership in managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions internally and through its supply chain.
Among its efforts in the area of managing the environmental impact of its supply chain through the lens of energy use, the Emeryville, Calif.-based company had implemented a renewable energy program called "50/50 by 2020." The program, Clif Bar & Co. explained in a March 2 news release, asks its supply chain partners to source at least 50% of the electricity they use on the company's behalf from green power sources, with the goal of to having 50 supply chain facilities transition to 50% or more green power by 2020.
To help its supply chain partners achieve that 2020 goal, Clif Bar & Co. offers free consulting with an expert in renewable energy procurement and finance, helping the companies find green power solutions that make business sense for them. Clif Bar also provides recognition opportunities at its annual Supplier Summit and encourages supply chain partners to join the EPA's Green Power Partnership program.
The combination of its efforts within its supply chain has resulted in more than 9 million kWh of new green power purchased each year, the company said. As of February 2017, 20 additional supplier facilities are being evaluated for achievement of the 50 percent goal, which likely will more than double the program’s impact by the end of this year.

As for its own operations, , and 80% of its electricity is generated by onsite solar.
The EPA recognized the company through its Center for Corporate Climate Leadership in collaboration with the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry.
