IKEA signs PPA tied to another Canadian wind farm
IKEA signed a multi-year power purchase agreement to receive energy from another Canadian wind farm, according to a July 18 news release.
Under the contact, IKEA will receive power from the 46-MW Oldman 2 wind farm, located near Pincher Creek, Alberta. The deal marks the Swedish furniture retailer’s second wind investment in Canada. In January, IKEA Canada purchased a wind farm near Drumheller, Alberta, for $119.6 million. Both facilities are managed and operated by Apex Clean Energy.
Under the terms of the PPA, the new IKEA wind project will be operated following Apex’s past management approach, in which the remote asset management center collects and processes an average of 432 million data points per day, according to the news release. The system will consist of 20 Siemens 2.3-MW turbines. and will be managed, both remotely and onsite, by Apex Clean Energy, according to the. It will be the fourth IKEA wind facility in North America managed by Apex.
The project continues IKEA’s work toward being energy independent by 2020, as part of the $2.5 billion it has allocated for renewable energy efforts for their retail locations and offices around the world. IKEA currently has installed more than 700,000 solar panels and owns approximately 300 wind turbines globally.
