Roanoke Cement receives 11th Energy Star certification

Roanoke Cement Company’s Troutville, Va., plant received its 11th consecutive U.S. EPA Energy Star certification on July 20 for its energy reduction in manufacturing over recent years.

Energy Star assessed Roanoke Cement’s energy use measured by the EPA’s energy performance indicator and required that the company perform in the top 25% of cement plants in the country for total thermal and electrical energy efficiency under standards set by the EPA

The company, a subsidiary of Titan America LLC, is the only cement company in the Commonwealth of Virginia, according to a July 27 news release.

“With over $100 million in capital upgrades since 1992, RCC has propelled itself into the highest echelon of 21st-century industry – environmentally aware and technologically savvy,” Congressman Bob Goodlatte, the representative for Virginia’s 6th district, said in a statement. “RCC's limestone lake restoration, Appalachian Trail access and Catawba Creek improvements have created a legacy its community recognizes and appreciates.”

Manufacturing has become a target in recent years for potential changes in energy use and the creation of energy efficiency projects. In November, CEMEX USA, which has supplied cement for iconic projects like the Hoover Dam and Hollywood Boulevard, announced that it received Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Certification and earned its fifth Energy Star certification.
