Arsenal Football signs RE deal for London stadium

Arsenal Football Club will begin implementing renewable energy projects in its North London stadium to help reach its clean energy goals and limit the amount of carbon emissions that the complex contributes.

According to a report from Bloomberg News, Arsenal signed a contract Aug. 3 with Octopus Energy Ltd. to power the Emirates Stadium with the energy produced from the utility’s anaerobic digestion plants - which break down the wasted food the complex produces to create biogas and electricity - as well as source from Octopus Energy’s solar farms.

The contract signed on Thursday for an undisclosed value followed a year long trial by Arsenal, a spokeswoman for the utility told the publication.

Arsenal signed Octopus Energy as its official energy partner in October 2016, following the utility’s launch to provide service to customers in April 2016. Arsenal saved 5.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the first year of the agreement, Bloomberg reported.

The renewable energy contract reflects the football club’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Additional environment efforts include the installation of voltage optimization equipment, which reduces the amount of power used by up to 20%, and the replacement of spotlights and fluorescent tubes to LED lighting, according to Arsenal’s environmental webpage. Concourse lighting was also set to motion detectors to limit unnecessary use.
