Vail Resorts targets zero net emissions, 100% RE
Global mountain resort operator Vail Resorts Inc. has taken on a bold new sustainability strategy with significant energy management and renewable energy implications.
The Broomfield, Colo.-based company, which operates a number of ski resorts in North America, has committed to achieving zero net emissions by 2030 along with a number of other initiatives under its "Epic Promise for a Zero Footprint." In support of its goals, Vail Resorts also committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.
"As a growing global company so deeply connected to the outdoors, we are making a commitment to address our most pressing global environmental challenge and protect our local communities and natural resources," Chairman and CEO Rob Katz said in a statement. "Through improved business practices, capital investment and continued innovation and environmental stewardship, we are setting a goal of achieving a zero net operating footprint by 2030."
The company outlined its strategy for achieving zero net emissions — including work toward electricity and natural gas use reduction targets — in detail in a July 25 news release. as part of its initiative.
On the renewable energy side of the coin, Vail Resorts said it is a member of RE100 and the Ceres coalition Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy. It plans to achieve its 100% target by working with utilities and local, regional and national governments to bring more renewable energy to the grids where it operates resorts.
RE100, led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, said in an email announcing the company's new membership that Vail Resorts, as a leader in the skiing industry, "feels a special obligation to protect the environment."
