Cargill marks progress toward GHG targets
Global agricultural company Cargill Inc. reported progress toward its greenhouse gas reduction goals in its 2017 annual report, noting work with The Nature Conservancy and other partners toward "a bolder path forward" against the backdrop of the Paris Agreement.
Offering a status update on its 2020 GHG reduction, energy efficiency and renewable energy goals, the Minnesota-based company said it improved GHG intensity by 3.2%, energy efficiency by 3.2% and its energy portfolio from renewable energy sources by 14.4% from a 2015 baseline.
Toward its renewable energy goals, Cargill said it uses 15 types of renewable energy at its facilities around the world; in total, this activity helped the company avoid 1 million metric tons of GHG emissions over the past year. The company detailed its activities further in its report:
What sets Cargill apart is our use of biomass – often byproducts of the agricultural goods we process that might otherwise go to waste. In Southeast Asia, for example, palm fruit fibers and hulls power nearly all of our oil palm plantations and mills.
Cargill has also deployed combined heat and power systems that decrease the amount of electricity it needs from the grid. On the transportation side of its business, the company has been working to advance sustainable ocean transportation as one of the largest charterers of dry bulk and tanker shipping.
