Lyft offsets Michigan game day-related emissions

Ride-sharing company Lyft recently partnered up with a carbon offset and renewable energy credit trading company to offset carbon emissions associated with travel for all University of Michigan football games this season.

The deal, according to a news release, will use carbon offsets sourced from a landfill gas project in Byron Center, Mich., to offset every Lyft ride in Ann Arbor, Mich., on game days, both home and away. For the university's first home game, Lyft balanced more than 10,000 miles of driving through offsets provided by Houston-based Terrapass.

"We realize that game day can put a large strain on the physical environment of Ann Arbor, and we want to do our part to reduce the impact. Lyft believes in the power of rideshare to not only reduce congestion, but build community," Elliot Darvick, general manager for Lyft in Southeast Michigan, said in a statement. "We're proud to partner with terrapass to help the Ann Arbor community while reinforcing to passengers that it matters how you get there."

In July, Lyft announced a new climate goal for its entire platform: All electric autonomous vehicles will be powered by 100% renewable energy. In blog post at the time, Lyft co-founders John Zimmer and Logan Green called climate change "one of the defining issues and greatest global threats of our time," and said the target is a reflection of the company's efforts to ensure that the U.S. remains on track to meet its Paris climate accord goals.
