Mohawk Valley Community College, a part of the State University of New York, on Nov. 1 celebrated the completion of a 2 MW AC solar project located in Rome, New York.

The offsite project is expected to directly offset the college's electricity cost and is a net-metered project supported by a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known as NYSERDA, according to a news release from groSolar, which developed, designed, and constructed the project.

"We are excited about this new venture that is good for our environment, good for our bottom line, and through this partnership, it will benefit our students as well," MVCC College President Dr. Randy VanWagoner said in a statement.

The project is expected to generate approximately 3,450,000 kilowatt-hours of clean renewable energy in its first full year of operations and offset more than 2,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide produced by more traditional energy generation sources, according to the release. The Rome Industries Development Corporation and funding through New York's NY-Sun initiative also helped support the project.

"Projects like this demonstrate that solar is a clean, affordable energy choice for communities across New York who are advancing Governor Cuomo's Reforming the Energy Vision strategy," NYSERDA President and CEO Alicia Barton said.

GroSolar is a subsidiary of EDF Renewable Energy.
