Tiffin University adds 240-kW rooftop solar array
Tiffin University in Ohio announced construction will begin on its first rooftop solar project. Located at the University’s Heminger Center, the solar array will feature 705 panels constructed on 14,000 square feet of rooftop space. Generating approximately 270,000 kWh per year, the system will supply about 26% of the building’s annual electricity consumption.
In a report from Solar Power World, University President Lillian Schumacher said, “With current challenges that surround funding for non-profit universities, Tiffin University feels strongly that we need to examine all means for cost-saving initiatives. The university is also intentional in doing what is right for the student body, faculty, staff, and local community by putting forth clean energy standards and striving to meet them.
The system will be owned, operated, and maintained by IGS Solar. The report noted that the company is helping TU integrate solar generation into its energy portfolio while helping the university better control the long-term energy costs for its buildings.
Construction will begin in October, with the array expected to be online in November 2018.
