Detroit Lions score with solar

The Detroit Lions have added solar-powered lights to the parking garage at their Ford Field home as well as their training facility in Allen Park, representing their first foray into solar energy as part of the team’s ongoing sustainability efforts.

Crain’s Detroit Business reported that the solar system was installed by Power Home Solar, which will invest $1.5 million with the Lions over three years, including a sponsorship deal and panel costs. The report noted that the company approached the Lions through its preexisting partnership with Lions punter Sam Martin, a supporter of renewable energy.

The parking garage and practice facility were chosen because solar could not be installed directly within the Ford Field facility. Ben Manges, the Lions’ team spokesman explained, "We couldn't seamlessly integrate them with our power grid. We had to install them on parts of our footprint that weren't necessarily tied from a power standpoint," adding, “As the overall technology continues to get more and more sophisticated, you'll see the potential for additional use."

The team had also cut energy consumption through the use of LED lighting. "We're always looking for ways we can improve our energy efficiency and conservation. The technology's only going to continue to evolve," Manges said. Solar panels are also a tool to encourage fans to use sustainable power in their homes, he said.
