Mercedes-Benz signs Germany’s first PPA

Mercedes-Benz has signed a PPA to power its operations in Germany with wind, representing the first corporate renewable PPA signed in that country.

A report by Reve said the agreement calls for Mercedes-Benz to buy 46 MW of wind power from six wind farms in Lower Saxony and Bremen. This power will be used to produce Mercedes-Benz’s EQC electric cr.

“It’s great that Germany has its first PPA,” said Giles Dickson, WindEurope’s CEO. “Corporate renewable PPAs have been growing rapidly in recent years, but mainly in Nordic countries, the UK and the Netherlands.  It’s a major breakthrough that they’ve now started in Germany.”

The report noted that the PPA will help lock in stable revenues for the wind farms, which are due to exit the German national Feed-in-Tariff scheme in 2021. PPAs are expected to expand in Europe in the next five years.
