T-Mobile launches wind farm, signs 5 RE contracts
T-Mobile will reach 95% sourced clean energy following a new wind project and five new energy contracts, which they announced during Climate Week NYC 2019.
The telecommunications company is launching its Solomon Forks Wind Project in partnership with ENGIE US Wind in Kansas. When the wind project goes online, it is expected to add 650,000 MWh of energy to the grid annually.
The five new energy contracts were signed with four solar farms and another wind farm, all of which are expected to go live by 2021. This will bring their total clean energy projects in the U.S. to eight, which will provide a total 3,017,000 MWh annually.
T-Mobile has previously committed to 100% renewable energy by 2021, and this these advancements get them just a step away from that goal.
“In 2018 we made a big industry-leading commitment to power ALL of T-Mobile — from cell towers to customer care centers to retail stores to headquarters — with renewable energy,” T-Mobile CEO John Legere said in a statement. “We know our operations have an impact on the environment and we want to do what we can to reduce that. Efforts like the ones we announced today just prove we continue to be ALL IN!”
In January 2018, T-Mobile became the first major U.S. wireless carrier to join RE100.
