Iron Mountain signs largest on-site solar PPA
Iron Mountain Incorporated signed their largest on-site solar PPA to date with a 7.2 MW installation to be implemented at their data center in Edison, N.J.
The storage and information management company expects the solar project to generate more than 9 million kWh per year and provide approximately 15% of the data center’s current energy load.
“The on-site solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) will be added to a portfolio of renewable energy contracts that already cover 100 percent of Iron Mountain's worldwide data center operations,” Kevin Hagen, vice president of environment, social & governance strategy at Iron Mountain, said in a statement. “It's part of Iron Mountain's mission to obtain local, reliable, cost effective, 24/7 renewable energy solutions to meet the company's RE100 goal of 100 percent renewable electricity for global operations.”
The project is under development in partnership with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources and Black Bear Energy and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. According to Iron Mountain, it will be the largest rooftop solar installation of any data center in the U.S.
The data center solar installation follows other sustainability initiatives that Iron Mountain has recently implemented. In February, they launched their Green Power Pass, software which enables data center customers to report carbon emissions reductions associated with the green power consumed at any data center worldwide in line with the requirements of the Future of Internet Power protocol.
"Akamai has developed a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient data center to support our New York tri-state platform operations," Mike Mattera, director of corporate sustainability at Akamai Technologies, Inc., said in a statement "Iron Mountain's Green Power Pass was a valuable part of that deployment. With Iron Mountain's rooftop solar installation, the partnership now aides our renewable strategy on a more local level."
