MGM Springfield completes 1.4 MW solar canopy
The MGM Springfield casino announced Dec. 19 the completion of a custom 1.382 NW solar canopy on the roof deck of its parking garage, expected to reduce the property’s carbon footprint by 410 metric tons.
The Springfield, Mass., based gaming resort expects the project to generate more than 1,600 MWh of electricity. With the competition of the new system, MGM Springfield was able to achieve LEED New Construction Platinum level certification, the first for a gaming resort.
“Our challenge was to design an efficient solar canopy that fit aesthetically with the magnificent MGM Springfield and could be installed at a cost that would deliver savings to MGM under a Power Purchase Agreement,” Ben Jones, Canopy Team Leader & Director of Engineering at Distributed Solar Development, said in a statement. “We were able to find the sweet spot of electrical, structural, and installation efficiency that’s not only cost effective but stamps MGM as an environmental leader.”
MGM previously committed to a goal of reducing carbon emissions per square foot by 45% by 2025, which this new project will help achieve. The project was financed through a $250 million fund for distributed generation from Distributed Solar Development, who completed the project. The DSD fund targets energy project being undertaken by commercial and industrial clients.
