Stop & Shop to power 40 stores from clean microgrid

Stop & Shop will begin to power 40 of its Massachusetts and New York stores with clean energy from a 24/7 microgrid, the company announced Jan. 14.

The grocery store chain expects to reduce its carbon emissions by over 15,000 metric tons per year through the use of the microgrids. The power will be provided from an AlwaysOn Microgrid configuration by Bloom Energy Servers, which receives natural gas or biogas fuel through an underground pipeline system and operates independently of the local electric grid.

“Our stores are an important community resource for our customers, particularly when severe weather strikes,” Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop, said in a statement. “Whether customers need to stock up on food, batteries, flashlights, other emergency items, or even their prescription medications, we know how vital the products and services our stores provide are. These Servers will not only reduce our stores’ impact on the environment but also ensure our stores can stay open when needed most.”

The installation of the microgrids is expected to begin early this year at locations on Cape Cod, followed by other stores in Massachusetts and Long Island. These microgrids convert natural gas or biogas fuel into electricity without combustion, using solid oxide fuel cell technology.
