Facebook, Google, AT&T claim top spots among 2019 corporate energy buyers

Facebook, Google and AT&T topped the list of the 2019 Top 10 Large Energy Buyers in a report that reveals a total of 9.33 GW renewable energy procurement in the U.S.

The Deal Tracker list ranks Facebook as the top buyer with 1.546 GW, Google as the second with 1.107 and AT&T as the third with 0.960 GW. The rest of the Top 10 list, in order, includes Microsoft, T-Mobile, Walmart, Amazon, Ball Corporation, McDonald’s and Honda.

The 2019 Top 10 Large Energy Buyers Deal Tracker was released Feb. 5 by the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and reflects the growing trend of clean energy procurement from C&I customers across the country.

“Well over half of all energy consumption comes from the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, so it is increasingly important that large energy buyers are identifying opportunities to reduce emissions,” Miranda Ballentine, CEO of REBA, said in a statement. “The leaders on our list understand that as part of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) planning, integrating renewable energy is one of the most significant ways to work toward a zero-carbon future while contributing to local economies.”

The REBA Deal Tracker is updated quarterly and lists contracted PPAs, green power purchases, green tariffs and project ownership of corporate customers. The current list includes Facebook’s newly in the works Altavista Solar project in Virginia and AT&T’s new Frontier Wind Power II project in Oklahoma.
