Walmart, Salesforce now receiving power from newly operational wind farm
A 205 MW wind farm in Illinois that will supply power to Walmart and Salesforce was recently competed and is now delivering clean power to the commercial customers.
The two companies made the development of the Bright Stalk Wind Farm, located in McLean County, possible through PPAs with EDP Renewables. Walmart is purchasing 123 MW of the wind farm's capacity and Salesforce will be purchasing 80 MW.
“We are consistently pursuing opportunities to expand our use of clean energy technologies,” Mark Vanderhelm, Vice President of Energy for Walmart Inc., said in a statement. “Our investment in the Bright Stalk Wind Farm directly reinforces Walmart’s commitment of powering 50 percent of our operations with renewable energy by the end of 2025.”
Similar to Walmart's 50% clean energy goal, Salesforce has previously committed to a goal of sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2022.
The wind farm represents a capital investment of more than $300 million and will pay out a variety of local farmers and landowners who lease a small percentage of their lands for the wind project.
With this project, EDP Renewables now boasts more than 1,000 MW of wind energy projects in Illinois.
