Redwood Coast Energy Authority plans new solar project for residents
California residents will soon be benefitting from a 100 MW solar project in Kern County through the Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA), a joint powers government agency focusing on increasing clean energy in the region.
The Sandrini Sol 1 Solar Park will be located near Bakersfield and was made possible through a 15-year PPA between EDP Renewables and RCEA, who will receive 100% of the project output.
Project developers estimate that the new solar power facility will meet approximately 45% of RCEA Humboldt County customers’ demand.
“The State has set a target for a 100% clean and renewable electricity mix by 2045, and RCEA has established the ambitious objective of hitting that target 20 years early, in 2025,” RCEA Executive Director Matthew Marshall said in a statement. “By providing enough affordable, renewable energy to meet almost half of our customers’ current electricity needs, the Sandrini Sol project is a major step toward achieving our local energy and climate goals.”
RCEA also has several other solar projects under development in the area, including a 2.5 MW solar and storage microgrid project at the Redwood Coast Airport and PPAs for another 3 MW of local solar projects recently approved through their feed-in-tariff program.
The Sandrini Sol 1 project is expected to be operational in 2022 and represents an estimated capital investment of more than $100 million.
