Northwestern University to source 11.9 MW of community solar
Northwestern University announced May 21 that they will be receiving 11.9 MW of energy from Illinois community solar projects through a new agreement.
The Evanston-based university completed the agreement with Clearway Energy Group and with their investment will support the development of 16 of Clearway’s community solar projects.
“This strategic partnership underscores Northwestern’s commitment to sustainability and supports Illinois’ transition to a greener economy,” Craig Johnson, senior vice president for business and finance at Northwestern, said in a statement. “We remain committed to achieving the greatest impact by supporting research, integrating sustainability into our culture and campus operations, and creating partnerships like this one that focus on renewable energy and climate change mitigation. From our innovative research, to our engaged students, to our progress in reducing the University’s carbon footprint, we strive to seek new and more sustainable ways to carry out our mission and ensure the environment remains a priority.”
The partnership between Northwestern and Clearway will give the university’s students the opportunities to benefit from studying and engaging with the solar infrastructure.
Additionally, community solar projects such as these assist Illinois toward its goal of sourcing 25% of electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
