Facebook sourced 86% of power from RE in 2019
Facebook used 86% renewable energy in their operations in 2019 and were recognized as the top corporate buyer of renewable energy in the United States that year by the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance.
The social media giant released their 2019 Sustainability Report July 7, which outlined other accomplishments such as their 59% reduction in operational greenhouse gas emissions between 2017 and 2019. With this achievement, they are on track to reach their goal of a 75% reduction by the end of 2020.
“We believe that climate change is an urgent issue facing the world today, and we are committed to doing our part to address this challenge,” Edward Palmieri, director of sustainability at Facebook, said in a statement. “Earlier this year, we partnered with various global organizations to develop our Climate Conversation Map, which provides new information to help others advance climate action, including important data and insights into how conversations on the topic ebb and flow throughout the world and over time. In addition, we partnered with organizations like We Are Still In, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Stockholm International Water Institute to advance sustainable practices and bolster climate action.”
In 2011, Facebook committed to being 100% in their facilities and have since committed to supporting their global operations with 100% renewable energy after 2020, a goal which their recent 86% achievement is in support of. At the end of 2019, they have more than 5 GW of renewable energy projects under contracts and over 1.3 GW of projects online and generating electricity.
