Fertiberia plans Europe's largest green hydrogen plant
Iberdrola and Fertiberia announced July 24 that they are teaming up in a 150 million euro investment into what will become the largest green hydrogen plant for industrial use in Europe.
The project will include a 100 MW solar plant, a 20 MWh lithium-ion battery system and a 20 MW electrolytic hydrogen production system. Fertiberia, a Spanish chemical manufacturer owns the ammonia plant in Puertollano where the green hydrogen produced by Spanish utility Iberdrola will be used.
“The partnership with Iberdrola allows Fertiberia to take a further step in its ambition to become a European reference for sustainable solutions for agriculture and to lead the paradigm shift required for the energy transition in the chemical sector, thanks to the manufacture of green ammonia from domestic renewable energy sources,” Javier Goñi, president of Fertiberia, said in a statement.
This project will allow Fertiberia to reduce natural gas requirements at the plant by over 10% and to become the first European company in the sector to develop large-scale green ammonia generation in this way. Once operational, the system is expected to avoid emissions of 39,000 tCO2 per year.
The new system at the Puertollano plant is expected to be operational in 2021.
