Anheuser-Busch explores beer cans made with hydropower
Anheuser-Busch InBev announced Oct. 6 a new partnership that will allow their beverages to be canned in a low-carbon aluminum made with renewable hydropower and recycled content.
The world’s largest brewer signed an MOU with Rio Tinto committing to work with supply chain partners to source low-carbon materials for AB InBev products.
The new, sustainably-made beer can made with recycled materials and hydropower could reduce carbon emissions by more than 30% per can compared to similar cans produced using traditional manufacturing techniques in North America. Additionally, the pair will explore technology involving zero carbon aluminum smelting.
“We are constantly looking for new ways to reduce our carbon footprint across our entire value chain and improve the sustainability of our packaging to reach our ambitious sustainability goals,” Ingrid De Ryck, Vice President of Procurement and Sustainability, North America at AB InBev, said in a statement. “With this partnership, we will bring low-carbon aluminium to the forefront with our consumers and create a model for how companies can work with their suppliers to drive innovative and meaningful change for our environment.”
The first 1 million cans produced through the partnership between AB InBev and Rio Tinto will be piloted in the U.S. on Michelob ULTRA. The two will also continue to work together on integrating innovative technologies solutions into AB InBev’s supply chain to improve the sustainability of their packaging.
