The Home Depot inks PPA with solar + storage in Texas

The Home Depot announced Oct. 13 that it will be procuring 75 MW of clean energy from a 284 MW solar and storage project, which could be enough electricity to power more than 150 stores nationwide.

The home improvement chain entered into a PPA with Enel’s U.S. subsidiary Enel Green Power North America, the owner of the 700,000-panel solar project. The Azure Sky project is Enel’s second solar + storage hybrid of this scale in North America and is expected to generate over 586 GWh of solar-powered electricity annually while avoiding over 386,000 tons of CO2 by using its energy to charge the battery at the facility. The extra power not supplied to The Home Depot will be delivered to the grid.

The Home Depot is currently pursuing the production or procurement of 335 MW of renewable or alternative energy.

“Our collaboration with Enel Green Power strengthens our efforts to tap into sustainable energy that’s produced off-site,” Ron Jarvis, chief sustainability officer of The Home Depot, said in a statement. “Not only does it expand our energy options and reduce our carbon footprint, but when The Home Depot procures or produces energy from renewable sources, we strengthen the business case for clean power alternatives.”

The Azure Sky project will pair the 284 MW solar facility with an 81 MW battery. The project is located west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Haskell County, Texas and is expected to be operational by summer 2021.
