Budweiser goes green for St. Patrick's Day

Budweiser announced that on March 17 it will purchase enough Renewable Energy Certificates to cover the estimated electricity used to brew every beer in the U.S. in a single day, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by turning its beer “green.”

While the purchased RECs are only equivalent to cover all beer production in one day, the wider campaign calls on the entire U.S. beer industry to prioritize a shift to renewable energy and envisions a future when all beer brewed in the U.S. is brewed with clean energy. The company used the initiative to invite other beer brands to join an industry commitment to brewing all beers in the U.S. with 100% renewable energy by 2030 -- what it calls the “Green Electricity Beer Bar.”

“Budweiser is brewed with 100% renewable electricity from wind power, something we are very proud of and inspired us to think differently about what the definition of green beer truly means and how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a new way this year,” Monica Rustgi, VP of marketing at Budweiser, said in a statement. “As one of the world’s biggest brands, we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact, and through this campaign, we invite others to join us in helping to change the beer industry to be a more sustainable one.”

Budweiser was the first Anheuser-Busch brand to be brewed with 100% renewable energy, while the parent company previously has signed the RE100 agreement and is committed to sourcing all its purchased electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Anheuser-Busch is the 20th largest user of renewable electricity in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership.
