Bucknell University Plans 1.6 MW On-campus Solar Array

Bucknell University announced April 13 that it will soon be installing a 1.6 MW solar array on seven acres of its campus.

The Lewisburg, Penn.-based university partnered with Encore Renewable Energy for the project, which will be responsible for project development and financing. The project just received approval from East Buffalo Township and should provide tax revenue to the township.

“Bucknell has been actively seeking opportunities to increase its use of renewable energy and reduce its dependency on carbon-producing sources,” Victor Udo, director of campus sustainability, said in a statement. “For more than two years now, the University has explored the installation of a solar array as a source of sustainable energy that can benefit both the University and the community. It will also provide an opportunity for student education and research in this rapidly expanding field.”

The solar installation will be completed on university-owned land beyond Bucknell’s West Athletic Field and Art Barn. The university also plans on the solar project to provide energy price stability for its operations over the next several decades.

The array will be surrounded by an agricultural fence and will feature pollinator-friendly vegetation between the panels.
