San Diego Coalition Launches EV Adoption Strategy
A coalition of San Diego public, private and nonprofit organizations launched the Accelerate to Zero Emissions (A2Z) initiative dedicated to transitioning to zero-emission vehicles to eliminate the carbon footprint of the transportation sector.
The initiative is made up of 13 entities from across the region, including SDG&E, the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, the county Air Pollution Control District, San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), CleanTech San Diego and the University of San Diego. The group released a gap analysis that identifies barriers to widespread adoption of zero-emission vehicles and quantifies how many EV chargers and hydrogen fueling stations are needed to meet San Diego’s share of California’s clean transportation goal.
“We have a long way to go to clean up the transportation sector – the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California and in our region and a very significant source of air pollution,” Estela de Llanos, SDG&E’s vice president of energy procurement and sustainability, said in a statement. “The gaps in our fueling infrastructure for zero-emission vehicles are so large, no single entity can solve the problem on its own. Regional collaboration is critical.”
The region is targeting 771,000 ZEVs on the road by 2030, out of the 8 million target set by the state. As of 2020, San Diego has approximately 69,000 ZEVs on the road.
To reach this target, the region needs 155,000 EV chargers and a few dozen hydrogen fueling stations. As of 2020, there were 6,700 chargers and one hydrogen fueling station.
Individual members of the coalitions are pursuing their own clean transportation goals, like SDG&E’s target to reach net zero emissions by 2045 and expand its regional EV charging infrastructure. The A2Z program is also focused on ensuring residents of all income levels have access to zero-emission vehicles and that charging infrastructure is also prioritized in underserved communities.
