Walmart Subscribes to NY Community Solar Projects
Walmart announced Aug. 3 that it entered into an agreement to support 129 MW of community solar projects, representing one of the largest deals of its kind.
The agreement with Nexamp subscribes Walmart to a share of each of the 23 solar farms across New York and to receiving energy credits equivalent to 50 MW of the portfolio. Thirty-two Walmart stores, four Sam’s Clubs, and one distribution center across the state will be participating in the program.
“Community solar at this scale allows Walmart to play a direct role in spurring economic development in the communities we serve and reinforces our goal to spark collective climate action,” Mark Vanderhelm, vice president of energy and facilities management at Walmart, said in a statement.
Walmart is currently pursuing a target of net-zero emissions by 2040 across its global operations and to source 100% renewable energy for its facilities by 2035. The retailer currently powers 36% of its operations with renewable energy and by the end of 2020 had more than 550 onsite and offsite projects in operation or under development.
