Total Transport to Trial Zero-Emission Freight Truck
Total Transport Services Inc signed Aug. 11 a trial agreement with Hyzon Motors to act as the first customer trial of their new hydrogen fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck.
The port trucking company operates in Southern California and provides logistics services within the U.S. and Canada. The agreement calls for Hyzon to provide a Class 8 heavy-duty fuel cell electric truck for a 30-day trial in Q4, during which time TTSI will run a full load from Long Beach to Sacramento.
The 2022 Freightliner Cascadia chassis model will be able to integrate into TTSI’s existing operations hauling up to 82,000 pounds of vehicle weight and will be the company’s first experience testing out a zero-emissions vehicle with 400 miles of range. The truck will also use the public heavy-duty hydrogen fueling station in Wilmington, Calif.
“Deploying the truck in real operations was a key requirement for us,” Vic LaRosa, president of TTSI, said in a statement. “TTSI's trucks run 18-20 hours each day, hauling heavy loads. Hyzon's FCEVs provide the quick refueling and high performance necessary to meet these operational needs.”
TTSI estimates that the heavy-duty trucks that operate in the Long Beach port emit around 2,600 tons of CO2 each year. The company plans to eventually operate a full zero-emission fleet and has in the recent past experimented with models that use liquid natural gas, compressed natural gas and hybrid technology.
“TTSI has led the way in contributing to California's clean-air initiatives by implementing new technologies ahead of the curve,” Hyzon CEO Craig Knight said. “Their use case – high utilization, heavy loads, focused around a central location – is very common and is precisely what Hyzon has been fulfilling internationally. Through this trial, Hyzon and TTSI will demonstrate how zero-emissions trucking in the US can be achieved in the near-term.”
