Hyundai Unveils Hydrogen Economy Transition Strategy
Hyundai Motor Group presented Sept. 7 its plans to popularize hydrogen use in transportation through hydrogen-based products and technologies by 2040.
The automaker unveiled its “Everyone, Everything and Everywhere” strategy at the Hydrogen Wave online forum. Its plan to advance a hydrogen economy includes becoming the first automaker to electrify all new commercial vehicle models using fuel cell electric or battery electric powertrains by 2028.
“Hyundai Motor Group's vision is to apply hydrogen energy in all areas of life and industry such as our homes, work-places and factories. The goal is to make hydrogen readily used for everyone, everything, and everywhere,” Chairman Euisun Chung said in a statement.
We want to offer practical solutions for the sustainable development of humanity and with these breakthroughs, we aim to help foster a worldwide Hydrogen Society by 2040.”
To further support this transition, Hyundai plans to introduce a new fuel cell system in 100 kW and 200 kW variations in 2023, which could lower costs by more than 50% and double power output. It will also work on achieving a fuel cell electric vehicle price point comparable to a battery-electric vehicle by 2030.
Hyundai released its first fuel cell-powered vehicle in 2013 and since then has been exploring ways to make such vehicles available for mass production. In 2018, it released the next-generation fuel cell SUV and in 2020 the first heavy-duty fuel cell truck.
