Fastenal Broadens Carbon Inventory
Fastenal Company completed a Scope 3 materiality assessment, a step to further broaden the company's carbon inventory and establish baselines for science-based targets.
The company plans to apply the output of the assessment to gain a more complete understanding of the carbon inventory related to its business and develop strategies to further reduce its environmental impact.
Fastenal, which provides industrial supplies including fastener, safety, and metal cutting products to manufacturing, construction, and state and local government customers, provided details in its 2024 ESG Report.
The report was produced with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and aligns with the ESG disclosure and reporting frameworks established by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB, now part of the IFRS Foundation) and the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
Through Puget Sound Energy's Sustainability Leadership Partners program, Fastenal’s Lacey, Washington, distribution center used 100% wind energy in 2023.
The company’s downtown office building in Winona, Minnesota, and its distribution facilities in Lacey, Washington, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Madison, Mississippi, achieved ENERGY STAR certification in 2023. Additional buildings are expected to be certified in 2024.
In 2024, Fastenal expects to participate in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership to purchase and use solar and wind energy within its distribution centers and manufacturing locations.
The company broke ground on a new building in Salt Lake City, Utah, recently that will serve as its distribution center for the region. This building has been designed with energy-efficient features and is slated to be completed in 2025.
In 2021, Fastenal conducted a test of a demo Orange EV fully electric yard tractor at its Indianapolis, Indiana, distribution center. Based on the success of the test, the company purchased a new Orange EV fully electric yard tractor for the facility, and the vehicle went into operation in July 2023.
The company also received a silver medal from EcoVadis, indicating the quality of Fastenal's sustainability management system ranked in the top 25% of all companies in all industries rated by EcoVadis in 2023.
