Tanger Adopts Solar, EV Charging at Shopping Centers

Tanger, an owner and operator of outlet and open-air retail shopping destinations, increased its renewable energy production through on-site solar infrastructure and now offers electric vehicle charging spaces at more than 90% of its centers.

In 2023, the company announced the production of over 9.3 million kWh of solar energy across nine locations, direct procurement of green power at five centers, LEED certification at 18 centers, electrification of 63% of its operational fleet with a goal of 100% by 2030, over 325 electric vehicle charging stations at its centers and several energy efficiency measures, including LED lighting at 100% of its centers, motion and daylight sensor control equipment, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and monitoring and control technologies.

Tanger Nashville, the company's newest development in Nashville, Tennessee, was built to LEED specifications and includes on-site solar energy production as well as free electric vehicle charging stations.

Details were released in Tanger's 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report for the annual period ending December 31, 2023.

"At Tanger, our progress is guided by four Core Values that demonstrate our commitment to our people, our communities, our planet, and our governance," said Stephen Yalof, President and Chief Executive Officer, in a statement. "We continue to elevate our ESG program across all four of these pillars, with a focus on increasing data integrity, resource efficiency, stakeholder engagement, and return on investment."

Tanger increased its environmental ambition for 2024 and the future and plans to establish a roadmap to Scope 1 and 2 net zero emissions, including interim targets, and to complete scenario planning in 2025 in line with the recommendations outlined by the former Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
