California Launches Renewable Hydrogen Hub
The Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the signing of a $12.6 billion agreement, including up to $1.2 billion from the DOE and $11.4 billion in public and private matching funds, to build and expand clean energy infrastructure across California.
The investment will directly reduce California’s reliance on fossil fuels, and the state was one of seven awardees last October of the DOE’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs).
ARCHES is the first of the seven H2Hubs to officially sign their agreement with the DOE.
The overall investment will begin with $30 million for the first tranche of funding out of the total project federal cost share of up to $1.2 billion.
At full build out, it is estimated that ARCHES DOE projects will result in $2.95 billion per year in decreased healthcare costs due to improved air quality, particularly along transportation corridors.
