TravelCenters of America Building Public Truck Charging Station

TravelCenters of America (TA) has broken ground on one of the country’s first publicly accessible medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) truck charging stations at its TA Ontario, California travel center.

TA, part of the bp portfolio since 2023, began the pilot project in collaboration with the California Energy Commission to support bp’s convenience and EV charging strategy.

By early 2025, the charging station will feature four 400kW chargers. An additional one MW charger with the ability to provide DC ultra-fast charging for up to five trucks at once will go live in 2026.

The station will double as an innovation site where bp can test and demonstrate new technologies, including the deployment of the first available megawatt charger systems, an integrated microgrid capable of generating power from 250 kilowatts of canopy-mounted solar panels, and a BESS for up to one megawatt of power.

TA, the California Energy Commission, and the Electric Power Research Institute began designing the charging station to demonstrate the effectiveness of public access charging for battery-electric heavy-duty trucks. With bp pulse, TA is planning to develop additional chargers in Southern California while looking to develop other corridors in the U.S. to support EV truck charging demand.

“Charging for trucks and passenger cars at TravelCenters of America locations is a key part of bp pulse’s strategy to bring ultra-fast EV charging to major metros and along key highway corridors across the US,”  said Sujay Sharma, CEO of bp pulse Americas, in a statement. “This project further demonstrates bp pulse and TA’s commitment to support fleet customers and is just the beginning of our endeavors in truck charging to build fast and reliable charging infrastructure to support our EV drivers.”
