In 2015, Canada was on pace to hit a new emissions peak in 2020 with emissions continuing to climb, hitting 9% by 2030. Now, the country has successfully bent the emissions curve and released a commitment to reducing its greenhouse emissions by 45–50% below 2005 levels by 2035.

Under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, the Government of Canada must establish five-year national emissions reduction targets, 10 years in advance, on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050. The 2035 target builds on Canada’s existing 2030 target, which aims to reduce emissions by at least 40–45% below 2005 levels.
