Dropbox sets 2030 sustainability goals, targets 100% RE
Dropbox released Aug. 5 their sustainability targets for 2030, including carbon neutrality, sourcing 100% renewable energy and supporting organizations working for climate action.
The file-hosting provider plans to achieve their carbon neutrality goal across all Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Additionally, they plan to also source 100% renewable energy not only in their operations but also in their data centers. Dropbox stated that data centers accounted for over 1% of all electricity consumption worldwide in 2018.
“As an organization, we feel a tremendous responsibility to create a more sustainable future,” Bart Volkmer, Chief Legal Officer at Dropbox and the President of the Dropbox Foundation, said in a statement. “It’s without question that the harmful effects of climate change impact everyone and we feel an urgent need to take action. That’s why we’re committed to achieving carbon neutrality and purchasing 100% renewable energy by 2030. We know that we are one small part of a larger solution and hope this inspires others to take steps in the right direction.”
Their sustainability goals also include encouraging an atmosphere of climate responsibility within the company. One of their goals is to mobilize employees to use volunteer-time-off to work on environmental causes. Additional sustainability goals include increasing storage capacity and lowering energy output through new energy-saving technology and finding ways to make day-to-day business practices more efficient, like working remotely and reducing business travel.
