D.C. United soccer field gets solar installation

D.C. United announced Sept. 9 that they completed the installation of a 627.8 kW solar array on the canopies and rooftop of their home field, Audi Field, in Washington, D.C.

The Major League Soccer club partnered with New Columbia Solar on the project, who completed construction in May alongside Commonwealth Power. The installation boasts 1,700 solar panels and is expected to generate over 787,000 kWh of renewable energy on-site and nearly 20 million kWh over its 25 years of operation.

As the second-largest solar installation at a Major League Soccer venue, the project will reduce the stadium’s carbon emissions by 556 metric tons and utility dependency by 30% annually.

“When we opened Audi Field in 2018, we made a commitment to reducing our environmental impact and mitigating climate change,” Zachary Abaie, Head of Communications for D.C. United, said in a statement. “New Columbia Solar’s best-in-class solar installation strengthens our position as one of the most environmentally-friendly entertainment destinations in Washington, D.C.”

Audi Field also earned LEED Gold certification in 2018 for its sustainability initiatives.
