Tampa City Council Passes Resolution for 100% RE by 2035
The City Council of Tampa, Fla., passed a resolution Aug. 5 calling for municipal operations to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2035.
The non-binding resolution supports goals like transitioning to a fleet of electric transportation, prioritizing zero-emission public transportation and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions. Council members voted 6-1 in favor of the resolution, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The resolution also calls on the state and federal governments to transition to clean energy and expresses support for energy efficiency upgrades to residential, commercial and government buildings.
The one member against the resolution argued that it didn’t include enough information about how the transition would be achieved.
Several residents expressed support at the meeting for the measure, including the Tampa Bay Sierra Club.
“The true authority on this will be the administration as the executive power,” Joseph Citro, the council member who introduced the resolution, said at the meeting. “However, we can take steps along the way, approving different things for the budget, making our requests known.”
