International Council on Mining and Metals Signs Joint Net Zero Ambition

The members of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) announced Oct. 5 that they have committed to reaching net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050 at the latest.

While individual members have their own decarbonization targets and strategies, this new move reflects the minimum ambition of the organization as a whole. The commitment includes individually setting interim targets for reaching net zero and establishing a pathway to reducing Scope 3 emissions by 2023.

These targets will be aimed at all sources of emissions across materials and span absolute emissions and intensity goals. The strategies deployed by members must be aligned with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and be regularly reported in alignment with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.

“As the suppliers of the minerals and metals that are critical to decarbonisation and sustainable development, we have a particular responsibility to minimise the impact of our operations on the environment,” ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan said in a statement. “ICMM members' collective commitment to net zero scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050 is a pivotal moment in our history. We are speaking with one voice, representing approximately one third of the global mining and metals industry – including more than 650 sites in over 50 countries – so that we drive emissions reduction at a significant scale.”
