New Supply Chain Structure Will Provide CA Ports with Clean Maritime Energy

Two major California ports will soon be receiving low-carbon maritime fuels through a new clean fuel supply chain solution.

West Coast Clean Fuels will deliver clean fuels, like LNG, RNG, biofuels, electrofuels and hydrogen-based fuels, to a fuel-cell-powered passenger ferry in San Francisco Bay owned by SWITCH Maritime and to two container ships in the Port of Long Beach. WCCF has been investing in fuel delivery equipment and establishing connections throughout the fuel value chain for such an operation since 2019.

The company will continue working with SWITCH Maritime to develop a hydrogen fueling solution for its 75-passenger ferry, which will receive 50,000 kg of green hydrogen annually from WCCF. Additionally, the Long Beach port, which handles nearly 40% of all U.S. imports, will receive 78 million gallons of LNG for the two container ships.

“Critical supply chains for low- and zero-carbon maritime fuels simply don’t exist yet,” Pace Ralli, CEO of SWITCH Maritime, said in a statement. “A lot of new infrastructure investment, both public and private, will be needed to make displacement of carbon-emitting fuels a reality. And that investment needs to start now if we’re going to be ready for the oncoming energy transition.”
