IT-Recycler Sims Plans Net-Zero Transition by 2050

Sims Limited announced Nov. 2 that it plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and become carbon neutral by 2042.

The metal and data IT recycling company released its fiscal year 2021 Sustainability Report, which includes its first Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures Report. Over the past year, the company established sustainability targets for 2025 and implemented a centralized environmental data collection system for tracking progress toward these goals.

The company established interim targets as well in the pursuit of net-zero emissions, such as a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 23% by 2025 compared to a 2020 baseline. Other achievements include sourcing 19% of its electricity use from renewable sources and increasing the repurposed cloud storage units entering secondary electronic markets to 31%.

Sims also established Sims Resource Renewal in FY21, which focuses on closing resource loops and supports the company’s goal to invest AU$160 million in solutions to close the metals recovery loop.
