LA to Complete Charging Infrastructure to Support EV Bus Fleet Transition
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation announced Nov. 5 that it will be installing 104 EV chargers paired with a solar and storage microgrid to support the transition of its bus fleet to electric models by 2028.
The agency was awarded a $6 million grant by the California Energy Commission to complete what will become one of the largest EV fleet charging networks powered by a solar and storage microgrid. Proterra and Apparent will install 1.5 MW of rooftop and bus solar canopy with a 4.5 MWh energy storage system at LADOT’s Washington Bus Yard where it will manage the charging and energy use for more than 100 electric buses. The installation will power five 1.5 MW fleet chargers and 104 remote EV charging dispensers.
The completed project will have a capacity of 7.5 MW of EV charging power. The transition to an electric bus fleet powered by solar power will allow LADOT to reduce its electricity costs and benefit from emergency backup power, all while reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
LADOT currently operates 29 EV buses and has 30 additional zero-emission buses on track for delivery by Summer 2022.
“Los Angeles is on track to achieve a zero-emission future and our investments in clean transportation systems are driving that progress,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. “The more electric vehicles we put on our streets today, the more we can lower emissions to ensure a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow.”
