Salt Lake City Government to Run Primarily on Renewables

The government of Salt Lake City expects to use renewables from a new solar farm to power 80% of its municipal buildings. 

The new 80 MW Elektron Solar farm will be connected to  Utah’s grid by 2023, according to an article by the Salt Lake Tribune.  Power from the farm will add only 2% more in costs than traditional energy, said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. 

The solar farm was developed by D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) and can produce energy through Rocky Mountain Power to Salt Lake City, plus other locations such as Deer Valley Resort, Park City, Park City Mountain, Summit County, and Utah Valley University.

The solar farm is anticipated to generate enough electricity for the next 25 years, Hy Martin, chief development officer of DESRI, said at a news conference in October.
