Record-breaking 260+ GW of Renewable Energy Added Globally in 2020
More than 260 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity were added around the world, an increase of almost 50% over expansion in 2019 and beating both estimates and records. According to data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), more than 80% of all new electricity capacity added in 2020 was renewable, with solar and wind accounting for 91% of new renewables.
Renewable energy = one-third of global power capacity
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced an annual increase of 7.9% for 2018 of global renewable energy capacity, bolstered by new additions from solar and wind energy. Globally, total renewable energy generation capacity reached 2,351 GW at the end of last year – around a third of total installed electricity capacity.
Infographic: Corporate sourcing of renewables—numbers behind the growth
A new report from IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) suggests that with the continued decline in the costs of renewables, corporate demand will continue to increase as companies seek to reduce electricity bills, hedge against future price spikes and address sustainability concerns.
Corporate sourcing of RE hit 465 TWh hours in 2017
Companies in 75 countries combined to source 465 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable energy in 2017, an amount close to the overall electricity demand of France.
IRENA: Renewable technologies competitive by 2020
The cost of offshore wind power has declined by around 25% since 2010, making it comparable to other energy sources, according to a new cost analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
