Williams-Sonoma saves 9.3M kWh through use of organic cotton

Williams-Sonoma released Oct. 13 its annual sustainability report, detailing its inclusion on Fortune’s ‘Change the World’ 2020 List and reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 12% since 2017.

This was the first year that the specialty retailer submitted a CDP Climate Disclosure. In addition to cutting Scope 1 and 2 emissions, earlier this year the company conducted a comprehensive Scope 3 emissions assessment for the first time.

Williams-Sonoma has reduced carbon intensity year over year since 2011 and since this past year 420 properties have been retrofitted or designed with LED lighting. This included 63% of its stores and 48% of its facilities, including offices, call centers, distribution centers and U.S. factories.

Since formalizing a process for a sustainable supply chain strategy in 2010, the company set a goal of sourcing 100% responsibly sourced cotton and 50% responsibly sourced wood by 2021. In 2019, the use of organic cotton saved an estimated 1,317 metric tons of CO2e and 9.3 million kWh of energy.

“Our company is Good By Design – we have deeply engrained sustainability into every facet of our business,” Laura Alber, President and CEO, said in a statement. “From our factories to our customers’ homes, we are united in a shared purpose to care for our people and our planet,”  “As we release this report, the world is facing social, environmental and health crises on a scale not seen in our lifetimes — yet we have witnessed incredible fortitude and agility from our associates and within our communities. We have fostered resilience through a culture of purpose and by managing resources responsibly, caring for our people, and uniting around our values, we create a stronger company that can withstand whatever comes.”
