Xerox targets carbon neutrality by 2040
Xerox announced Oct. 21 that it is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60% by 2030.
The workplace technology company released its 2020 Global Corporate Social Responsibility Report, in which it detailed its plans to include the advancement of clean technology that eliminates emissions and waste around the world as its fifth innovation pillar
In 2019, Xerox saw a 35% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from a 2016 baseline. The company estimates that it saved 320,000 tons of CO2e between 2002 and 2016, which was its first baseline period of emissions reduction.
“While corporate social responsibility isn’t new, this year has crystalized what it really means, and the role we must play, as we face three enormous challenges – the impacts of the pandemic, social inequality, and climate change. I’m incredibly proud of the strong performance of the Xerox team during this extraordinary time,” John Visentin, vice chairman and CEO of Xerox, said in a statement. “We have learned in profound ways just how interconnected we are, despite our differences, and that we must work together to make meaningful progress against all that challenges us as individuals and society.”
Xerox’s energy consumption decreased 9% between 2018 and 2019. The company has pursued technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of its operations, including manufacturing process changes, improved product reliability, building consolidations and upgrades and product innovation to create items that require less energy for use.
