Exelon Utilities Targets Net-Zero by 2050
Exelon Utilities recently announced its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and, in the interim, reduce its operational emissions by 50% by 2030.
Exelon Utilities is composed of Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and PEPCO, serving more than 10 million customers. Each of the individual utilities has already begun to reduce their own emissions and deployed technology like smart grids, EV infrastructure and other grid efficiency tools.
To further reduce its emissions, Exelon Utilities plans to convert 30% of its vehicle fleet to electric by 2025 and 50% by 2030, invest in energy efficiency and renewable electricity infrastructure and modernize its natural gas infrastructure to minimize methane leaks.
Exelon will also work with state and local leaders to advocate for the implementation of climate policies like emissions goals and new grid technologies. Each of the Exelon utilities has also taken steps to support EV adoption and consumer energy efficiency programs in their jurisdictions.
“Our customers have made clear that climate change is important to them and they want us to continue being part of the solution and pushing ourselves to do more,” Calvin Butler, CEO of Exelon Utilities, said in a statement. “These aggressive goals seek to eliminate emissions from our utility operations, provide needed support to state and local climate goals and give customers expanded access to clean and affordable energy solutions.”
