Additionality and Renewable Energy Certificates
In this fact sheet, the Center for Resource Solutions addresses the value of renewable energy credits claims and the concept of additionality, a term often used by corporations in markets for tradable greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
The two-page primer explains why, while one of the most important qualities for carbon offset projects, additionality is not required for renewable electricity generators to create RECs or for REC buyers to claim use of renewable electricity. Even without additionality, CRS argues, REC buyers are still impacting the development of new renewable resources.
