Tesco achieves carbon emissions cut
Tesco announced a decline in net carbon emissions by 13% in the past year and 26% over two years. In its Annual Report, the retail company said it achieved the reduction by increasing procurement of renewable power, now at 100% in the UK and 55% globally, as well as by investing in energy efficiency.
A report by The Energyst noted that the outcome of the decline is a reduction in net carbon intensity per square foot of retail and distribution floor space of 6% year on year. UK-based Tesco operates more than 6,800 stores.
The Annual Report reiterated Tesco’s previously stated science-based targets to reduce absolute carbon emissions from operations from 2015/2016 levels by 35% by 2020, 65% by 2025, and 100% by 2050. The company has also announced plans to source 65% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and 100% by 2030.
